CHAPTER 14

TROPHY TIME

Two goals on his United debut, two more on his Premier League debut and now the winner in the Manchester derby – could Marcus’s breakthrough season get any better?

Yes, if he could win a team trophy! Wasn’t that what every player wanted most of all? United were already out of the League Cup and the Europa League, plus they were down in sixth place in the Premier League. So the only competition left was the FA Cup, which they hadn’t lifted for twelve years.

‘Come on, let’s make that trophy ours!’ said the captain, Michael, urging on his teammates. As a club legend, he was used to winning lots of silverware. United’s chances of lifting the FA Cup were looking good until they drew 1–1 with West Ham at Old Trafford in the sixth round. Now, they would need to win the replay at the Boleyn Ground. That didn’t sound too difficult, but other than that famous Manchester derby victory, United’s away form was awful. Still, with Marcus, Anthony and Jesse all there in attack, anything could happen…

Early in the second half, Anthony burst forward with the ball and slipped it through to Marcus on the edge of the West Ham box. DANGER ALERT! He had one defender in front of him and three more chasing from behind, but Marcus had been practising his best Brazilian Ronaldo impression for years.

Tap, stepover to the left, shift to the right… BANG! – TOP CORNER!

Gooooooooooooooooooaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaalllllllllllll lllllllllllllll!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

‘Mate, what a strike!’ Anthony congratulated Marcus with a high-five and a hug.

Together, they were forming a very promising strike partnership, with so much pace and skill.

It was Anthony who grabbed the winner against Everton in the semis to take United through to the FA Cup Final.

‘Get in!’ Marcus cheered loudly as the team celebrated in front of the fans at Wembley.

A month later, United were back there at ‘The Home of Football’ to take on Crystal Palace, and hopefully, to end their season on a high.

For Marcus, it was his first taste of that special Wembley Cup final atmosphere. Wow, what an experience! As the two teams walked out onto the field, they came face-to-face with the sights and sounds of 88,000 supporters.

Come On You Reds!

We all Follow the Palace!

UNI-TED! UNI-TED!

EAG-LES! EAG-LES!

Marcus had already played in the Manchester derby, in European nights at Old Trafford and also away at Anfield, but this felt even bigger. That’s because there was a top trophy up for grabs. Winning the FA Cup would be the perfect way to end his exciting first season at United. ‘Eighteen games, eight goals and one trophy’ – yes, that sounded so much better.

So Marcus started the 2016 FA Cup Final like a hero in a hurry. After a clever one-two with Wayne, he dribbled all the way down the left wing and into the Palace penalty area. He almost escaped past Damien Delaney, but at the last second, the defender cleared the ball out for a corner.

‘Come on!’ the United fans roared, feeding off the energy of their young striker.
